“Why not?” Andy asked, grinning. He knew she’d hate bowling, but he wanted to see her protest. “Why don’t you like bowling?”

“It’s just this unmanageable ball that rolls down a lane and hits a bunch of white pingy things.” Lucy made a sweeping gesture with her hands. “And then you do it over and over and over until your arm falls off. It’d be as much fun as getting your toe run over by a bakery truck. Or in your vernacular…as much fun as a stock market crash.”

“I hate bowling too. It was just a test.”

“What?” Lucy gave Andy’s arm a slap.

“What would you like to do?” He raised a forefinger. “No, wait, don’t tell me. Let me guess. You’d like to go rock climbing, because you’ve never done it before. Or maybe you’d enjoy a unique evening at the culinary institute where the students get to show off their stuff. Or perhaps you’d prefer to take in one of the local antique auctions.”

Lucy nodded as if she’d witnessed an alien landing. “Okay, that is really scary. How could you possibly know I would like all those things?” She shook her finger. “Have you been talking to my mother?”

“No, not at all. I can read people. I’ve always been able to. I learned it from watching life.”

“Instead of living it?” Lucy raised a pretty eyebrow.

“Now you’re being a little too perceptive, Lucy.” Andy rose from the couch.

“Do you think Ian takes advantage of your loyalty…perhaps unintentionally?” Lucy asked.

Andy didn’t answer. Maybe it was true, a little bit. But he’d have to think about it more.

“Would you say yes if it were true?” She cocked her head at him.

“I wouldn’t. No.” Andy picked up a knickknack from the coffee table—a monkey carved out of wood.

Lucy got up from the couch. “That was a hard thing for me to ask. I hope you know that, since I think Ian is about the best thing since the invention of the Sunbeam Bread Machine.”

“I know,” Andy said. “By the way, your toast to him was beautiful.”

“Was it? Good. And I do understand about the loyalty thing. After what my mother went through with my father abandoning us, and then raising me on her own, well, there isn’t anything I would deny her. That’s why I’m giving her the money to start up the bakery wherever she would like. My mom was there for me all my years growing up, and she’s still there for me. She’s the heroine in my life story. This time I’m going to be there for her, even if it means moving to the other side of the planet.”

Andy stared at the wooden monkey in his hands. “Well, it sounds like we both have commitments that are quite serious.” He held up the knickknack. “Now what would possess Shirley to buy this thing? I know it cost her a small fortune, but it’s hideous.”

“Sometimes I don’t think rich people buy things because they need them or even want them…but merely because they’re there to buy.
